I would REALLY love to get your thoughts on this one. It’s pretty out there!
Check out this story on Artificial Meat. Yes, you read that right. Scientists are now working in labs to create artificial meat.
Now on the surface it seems ludicrous. I know when I first saw it I immediately thought, "there’s no way in hell I’m eating artifical meat!"
But what about World Hunger? What if your choice was to eat Artifical Meat or nothing?
Seriously, I’d love to know your thoughts. According to the article this "meat" could be on store shelves in 5 years or so.

Yeah, I hear ya, meat conventionally grown as it is, is not healthy already. So I don’t know why they insist on making matters worse, their so concerned with wondering if they can do this, without really stopping to think if they should. I guess we just can eat meat anymore, because grass fed is just to expensive and really unavailable through the regular market and not to mention tastes like crap (to me anyhow), which is probably the real reason it’s not readily available to us in the stores to often.

Assuming it’s not a hormone filled monstrosity, I see this as a (potentially) good source of food.
Certainly something to be considered as a supplemental food, although it’s unlikely that I (or any other foodie to be honest) will want to use it as an actual full on replacement for meat.
Its a strange concept, but it could be made nutritionally more sound (lower fat, higher protein content, etc) but it might also end the ethics and cruelty issues surrounding the raising and production of cattle. And end to ‘mad cow’ disease, and the beginning of ‘ happy cow ‘? Lol.
I find your comment “there’s no way in hell” quite shortsighted on this issue. Yes it is a world hunger issue. It is also a sustainability issue considering limited land available to grow crops for human consumption vs animal feed.
What is also at issue is the animal cruelty practiced as a matter of course by Agribusiness. By rejecting artificial meat out of hand, you are dooming millions of animals to a hideous existence that can have unhealthy repercussions on humans. The meat industry has also proven time and again that they are unable to adhere to even the most basic processing safety standards, as evidenced by the latest in a chain of recalls.
My husband and I have been vegetarians since 2001 and have not eaten red meat since the 90s. He is a hockey player. I swim and do boot camp workouts. We are both Technical certified Scuba Divers. We are both healthy and get enough protein without eating meat.
There is a larger issue being addressed here than just taste and historical preference and dismissing this out of hand would be ill-advised.
This is not the most eloquent of quotes, but that is gross! There is no way that will be good for you. It defies logic really.
Something to keep an eye on for sure.
Patience is warranted with things like this, and “knee-jerk” reactions won’t help.
Let’s see what further research shows.
Soylent green is finally here!
Sandra, I would consider this: cows are alive today because we have use for them aka we eat them. With all that’s happening in the world, the only thing that keeps certain animals from extinction is our perceived use for them (even if it’s just seeing elephants running around… still sorta “useful”). Anyway, if we find a more cost-effective way to produce good enough beef, we my as well say our goodbyes to cows a couple hundo years from now. :(… no more cows.
Then again, ending world hunger is also pretty important. Maybe we just have too many people? You know what they say: when in doubt, eat a friend. : )
I watched a sci fi programme called Eureka, they ate artificially produced meat from a lab and became stupid. Extreme I know. But I wouldn’t risk it. surely it will be flooded with hormones and chemical heaven knows what by deffinition its got to be to grow.
Why not just use what we have from nature.
I would not eat genetically grown meat. Something about it just seems funky. I’d prefer the meat of an animal, the way it has been for many, many years on our planet. Save the lab experiments for what matters more, use the grown meat to re-grow arms and legs for amputees.
It seems as though any time we get very “far from the farm” that the general health attributes of the given food depart. I ranched growing up, and have been in the “cruel” animal agriculture industry my whole life. The majority of people in this industry excercise exeptional animal husbandry because their living is directly correlated with a productive, and therefore healthy animal. Due to the ruminant digestive system, these animals process material of no human value (grass, browse) to wholesome food, leather etc. the majority of their lives. The trend in the industry is more focus on natural wellness and less use of processed starch (corn) to raise these animals, unlike the majority of Western humans. Unless we figure out how to convert grass to human food, the wasteland (majority) on earth will be unproductive without ruminants. This looks like a case of wasted resources. Why not peanut butter and B12 supplement?
Wondering why my comments were not posted. Should stimulate discussion. Also, for the record, I am in exceptional shape at 37 with meat being a major part of my diet, hold an M.S. in nutrition, and thought I wrote with reasonable respect to the other comments and the English language.
